The Perfect Colours
Have you ever wondered why certain colors make you look amazing and confident while others leave you feeling dull or washed out? My friend Crystal has been an advocate for getting your “colors done” for years and once she became a consultant, I knew I had to experience it for myself.
The Science Behind Colours
I always thought my color was blue. Often times when I would wear blue clothing, I would get compliments. I recently purchased a bright blue sweater that did not look good on me at all, and I was stumped.
Come to find out, each season of the House of Colour includes various shades on the color wheel. At the beginning of the color appointment, the trained House of Colour Consultant gives an overview of the science used to find a person’s color pallet.
Each person has a natural warm or cool tone that is determined by the color of the fatty blood cells underneath their skin. Once a person determines if they’re a cool or warm shade, then the consultant moves to determine their season. Spring and Fall are warm shades, while Winter and Summer are cool shades. Each season has a full pallet of colors that embody their specific tone and shades that look best on their skin.
The Consultation Process
House of Colour has offered personal color and style analysis for over 35 years. The company is based in the United Kingdom (hence the usage of “colour” rather than “color”). They now have trained consultants located across the United States that specialize in providing insight and expertise to find what colors look best on an individual person. The consultants use a range of fabric swatches and they assess your skin tone, eye color, and hair color to determine your dominant color characteristics.
This process is done by using natural light and by draping various color swatches across the shoulders of the client. Each client also must not wear any make-up, so the colors are determined by their natural skin. Their hair will also be pulled back by a headband, so artificial hair color won’t impact the analysis.
The Benefits of Knowing Your Colors:
Enhances your appearance: Wearing colors that harmonize with your natural coloring can make a big difference in how you look. The right colors can make your skin appear healthier, minimize the appearance of imperfections, and create a glow.
Streamlines your wardrobe: Getting dressed in clothes that don’t complement you is the worst feeling. I now carry my color swatches everywhere and I know what clothes I should be adding to my wardrobe. By knowing what colors to focus on, you can save time, money, and the frustration of purchasing items that don't suit you.
Boosts confidence: When you feel confident in what you're wearing, it impacts your overall confidence. Knowing that your outfit is enhancing your features and aligning with your natural coloring can give you a sense of self-assurance.
Creates a signature style: Discovering your colors empowers you to develop a personal style that is uniquely yours. By choosing colors that resonate with your personality and appearance, you can create a consistent and cohesive image that reflects your authentic self.
Book Your Consultation
I would HIGHLY recommend my friend Crystal as a House of Colour consultant. I also love to follow Kylie in Missouri and Rachel in Texas. If you’re not near the consultants I mentioned, visit the House of Colour website to find a consultant near you.
Having your colors done with House of Colour is not just about wearing pretty shades; it's a journey of feeling empowered. By understanding the colors that harmonize with your natural coloring, you can transform your personal style, boost your confidence, and create a signature look.
The Outcome
I went to the appointment with my mom and my sister. We are proof that genetics don't determine colors because we are all different seasons! I wanted to be a winter because winters look best in blacks, whites, and bold colors. My sister ended up being a winter, while my mom and I were both warm seasons. I am a spring, and my mom is an autumn.
It was such a fun way to spend the day together and we learned a lot about what clothing and make-up best compliments our features.
