Why I Quit My Job
I’m proud to share I’m officially self-employed!
After many prayers, multiple discussions with my inner circle, and a few tears; I decided to step away from my full-time job to start my own marketing consulting business.
I’ve been preparing for this moment my entire adult life. My parents are both self-employed and I always appreciated the lifestyle they created for our family. The hard work they poured into their endeavors was apparent and that drive was instilled in me. Knowing that owning my own business was a personal goal, I took multiple business classes in college and graduated with a minor in entrepreneurship.
Then, one year ago, a mentor and dear friend of mine sat across from me at dinner. She was in the midst of battling cancer and I was soaking up every minute we spent together. She shared the experiences that she had as a brilliant agriculture marketer and then she encouraged me to start my own business.
I had kept that in the back of my mind throughout the following months. Opportunities presented themselves that allowed me to plan for a big career move. I was so excited when I got to call that dear friend (who told cancer to kick rocks) and let her know I was joining the world of self-employment.
I’m grateful to have built a career in agriculture marketing and communications through my experiences at a start-up business, a government office, and a for-profit corporation. I’ve enjoyed the people I worked with and the projects I’ve been a part of. Why did I decide to quit my job?
How I knew I was ready to start my own business
1) Opportunities presented themselves
I’ve always prioritized building a network and cultivating relationships within the agriculture industry. Those relationships have since allowed me the opportunity to launch my business. Two professionals I greatly respect reached out about collaborating on upcoming projects. I initially thought I would keep working my full-time job and take on the new projects as a side hustle. My husband kindly pointed out that I was going to exhaust myself (or already had). I then came to the realization that I needed to make a bitter-sweet decision, stay at my current 9-5 or start my own business.
2) Listening to God’s signs
We recently decided to try a new church the Sunday after a draining work trip. The message that particular Sunday was about listening to God’s signs. Sometimes it’s easy to ignore what he’s trying to tell you. I left that service knowing God was sending me a message I couldn’t ignore anymore.
3) Betting on myself
If not now, when? I don’t believe there will ever be the perfect time to make a big change. I do know that I am excited to offer energy and focus to businesses looking to expand their experience-based marketing efforts. When it’s all said and done, I’d rather look back and be proud of the risk I took versus questioning what I could have accomplished.
What’s next?
My expertise in the agriculture marketing space is around building experiences with digital platforms and events. I am proud to introduce LMB Consulting, a business focused on offering experience-based services to agricultural companies.
I am excited to be embarking on this new adventure. A special thank you to my husband, my family, and my inner circle for encouraging me to take this leap.
