How to Prepare for a Spray Tan

This girl appreciates a bronzed glow, yet living in the Midwest and having skin that burns instead of tans, I quickly realized the benefit of spray tans. I’ve been relying on spray tans for years to look and feel my best. Plus it’s a great way to achieve a sun-kissed glow without exposing your skin to sun damage.

To ensure that your spray tan looks natural and lasts as long as possible, it's important to prepare your skin beforehand. Hours (or up to a day) before the spray tan, be sure to shower and follow the tips below.

Before a Spray Tan

Exfoliate

The first step to prepping your skin for a spray tan is to exfoliate. This removes dead skin cells that can cause your tan to look uneven or patchy. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub or loofah to slough off dead skin and make your skin feel smooth and silky. Pay special attention to rough areas like your elbows, knees, and ankles.

Shave or Wax

If you're planning on removing any hair from your body, do so before getting a spray tan. Shaving or waxing after your tan can cause the color to fade or become splotchy. Make sure to give your skin enough time to heal after any hair removal treatment before getting your spray tan, for at least a day.

Moisturize

Hydrated skin holds onto a tan better than dry skin, so it's important to moisturize before your spray tan. However, make sure to use a lightweight lotion. Avoid using heavy lotions or oils, so you don’t accidentally create a barrier that prevents the spray tan from soaking into your skin.

Skip the Makeup and Deodorant

On the day of your spray tan appointment, it's best to go makeup-free and avoid using deodorant. Both can create a barrier that prevents the spray tan from developing properly. If you need to wear deodorant, make sure to use a clear, unscented formula.

After a Spray Tan

Wear Loose, Dark Clothing

After getting a spray tan, avoid tight clothes that can rub off the color. Instead, wear loose, dark clothing that won't rub against your skin. Avoid wearing a bra or tight underwear that can leave marks on your skin.

Don't Shower or Sweat

After getting a spray tan, you'll need to avoid getting wet for at least 8-12 hours. This means no showering, sweating, or getting caught in the rain. If you do get wet, the color may run or become patchy. Once you've waited the appropriate amount of time, you can shower as usual, but DON’T use soap during the first wash and avoid scrubbing your skin.

PRO TIP for spray tans

Find a custom tanning salon. I’ve done a machine and that leads to orange hands and terrible coverage. If you’re in Central Iowa, check out Tanique and if you’re in St. Louis, I’d recommend Amy Jane Beauty.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your spray tan looks natural and lasts as long as possible. With preparation and care, you can achieve a beautiful, sun-kissed glow that lasts for days.
