Eat, See, Do: A Guide to the Iowa State Fair
The countdown is on to the icon Iowa State Fair! There's no better way to celebrate this annual tradition than preparing to eat all the fair food, exploring the sites, and people-watching. Whether you're a regular fairgoer or a first-timer, here's your guide to making the most of your visit to the Iowa State Fair, from what to eat to what to see and do.
Eat: Indulge in Fair Food
One of the highlights of any fair experience is undoubtedly the food. If you’re headed to the Iowa State Fair, the best way to find new food and the yearly staples is through the app. Download the app to discover exclusive deals, promotions, and even freebies.
INSIDER TIP: Make sure to take advantage of Iowa's number one egg production special offer: a free egg for every visitor! It's a fun, free, treat that showcases the state's agricultural production and is a great source of protein! Visit the Ag Building to grab your egg. To add flavor, be sure to sprinkle the hardboiled egg with the seasoning that is offered.
Once you've grabbed your free egg, dive into the variety of fair food options. From classic corn dogs to innovative deep-fried creations, there's something to satisfy every taste bud. Don't forget to try the local as well, like Beattie’s watermelon, The Rib Shack’s brisket mac and cheese, and the dairy barn.
See: Explore Fair Culture
After satisfying your taste buds, it's time to explore the cultural gems that the fair offers. Be sure to visit the livestock barns, where you can get up close and talk to exhibitors who have worked all summer, preparing their animals for the competition. As a livestock girl, this is my favorite place to be.
Next, make your way up the hill to the Cultural Center. Walking through the dollhouse exhibit is one of my favorite things to do each year. The details that go into each dollhouse is amazing! It’s also fun to vote for your favorite doll house design.
Of course, no fair visit is complete without a stop at the iconic Ag Building to witness the legendary butter cow sculpture. Carved from butter, this beloved attraction is a well-known annual tradition that is a must-see for fairgoers of all ages. The accompanying sculptures change each year, so be sure to visit and see what theme is featured this year!
Do: Experience the Thrills
The fair is not just about food and culture; it's also a hub of entertainment and excitement. Get ready for a lineup of free concerts featuring local talent and rising stars. Check out the grandstand concert series for headlining acts and musical spectacles under the summer sky. For the full concert list, visit the fair’s website here.
Thrill-seekers will love the adrenaline rush of the Big Slide and can test their skills in various contests, from pie-eating competitions to quirky challenges like mom-calling and husband-calling contests. It's all about friendly competition and good-natured fun.
Quench your thirst with craft beer and fun drinks available throughout the fairgrounds. Sip on local brews or opt for refreshing concoctions that complement the summer vibe. My favorite spots for a cool drink are the Iowa Craft Beer Tent, JR's SouthPark Ranch, and Stockman’s.
Whether you're a foodie, a culture enthusiast, or an adventure seeker, the Iowa State Fair has something special in store for you. So mark your calendars, gather your friends, and prepare for a memorable journey through food, culture, and fun at this year's Iowa State Fair!
